We’ve made no comment on NASS zoning: Kwara Gov

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said Governors from North Central have not made any public statement on the zoning formula for parliamentary positions, denying a media report quoting them as rejecting the position of the party leadership on the issue.

AbdulRazaq said the Governors, being party leaders from the region, cannot adopt confrontational posture against the party’s position but are instead holding strategic meetings with different stakeholders to secure a better deal for the North Central.

“Media reports that we reject the party’s position are therefore a stretch of our approach. They are not factual. We have our channels of communication, and that is what we are exploring,” the Governor said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye.

“We are party people and will not make any public statement or do anything that will rubbish its leadership or cause avoidable tension in the polity. That is not our way.”

AbdulRazaq congratulated the two judicial officers on their appointments and urged them to commit themselves to duties in line with the constitutional oaths they have just subscribed to.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, for his part, said: “We are gathered to witness the performance of the constitutional duty of the Executive Governor of Kwara State as enjoined by the provision of Section 271(1) and 276(1) of the 1999 constitution which vested the Governor with the power to appoint the Chief Judge of Kwara State and Grand Kadi for the Shariah Court of Appeal upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and confirmation by the House of Assembly.

“I commend Your Excellency for the continuous support of the judicial arm of government and pray that Almighty God continue to see Your Excellency through in all your undertakings and commitments to take this State to greater heights.”

The swearing in was attended by several dignitaries from government, the bar and the bench, as well as the clergy, such as Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi; Speaker Kwara State House of Assembly Engr Yakubu Danladi Salihu; members of the state legislative, judiciary and executive arms; and traditional rulers.

The Khalifatul Adaby (Ilorin) Sheikh Abdulqodir Muhammad Kamaldeen also attended the inauguration.

Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Adebara, assured the governor and the people of Kwara State that brother-judges, together with the entire workforce of the Kwara State Judiciary, are committed to serving the people to the best of their abilities.

He added: “I would like to take a moment here to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to His Excellency, the Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for my appointment as the Chief Judge. I am humbled and honoured to have been so appointed. Without mincing words, Your Excellency, permit me to say here publicly that I see our appointments as another of Your Excellency’s commitments to promoting justice, equity, and fairness in our state. By allowing the exercise to proceed seamlessly without any rancour or controversy, you have demonstrated remarkable leadership in giving a sense of belonging to all.”

He commended the Governor for his hard work, humility, and commitment to raising the bar of good governance and service to the people — qualities he said had just earned AbdulRazaq a new term of four years.

The memo said the balance of the debits, if any, would be credited/remitted to the state government’s account by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and “where the 60% cannot defray all the state government’s domestic debt to tje Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Finance will continue the deduction directly from the FAAC Share of the state government as being done before”.

The council approval would be transmitted to the House of Assembly for legislative consent.

The council meanwhile has also approved the commencement of the Islamic Development Bank-funded Special Agroprocessing Zone (SAPZ) with payment of the counterparts funding for the project which would strengthen food security, create thousands of jobs, promote infrastructural development, and lessen the perennial clashes between farmers and herders.

Kwara APC urges voters to go out en masse to perform civic duty as campaign ends

• urges voters to go out en masse to perform civic duty

Kwara State All Progressives Congress has told its supporters to suspend all categories of campaign as the law clearly disallows any form of campaign 24 hours to the election.

“We hereby notify our members that the windows allowed for political campaigns have closed at midnight on Thursday. We therefore appeal to our members to respect the law. Contrary behaviors will be a breach of the law, and the APC as a party will not be party to or responsible for that,” according to a statement by the party’s spokesman Alhaji Tajudeen Folaranmi Aro.

“The next phase of this process is for all our supporters and the people of Kwara State who are eligible voters to ensure they come out in large numbers on Saturday March 18 to cast their votes as part of their civic duty and an affirmation of their support for the candidates of their choice. Sitting down at home is not good for our democracy. Neither does sitting at home on Election Day help any efforts to consolidate the democratic gains so far recorded in Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.”

Top opposition candidate Gobir steps down for Kwara Gov

Governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) Waziri Yakubu Gobir has officially stepped down for the incumbent Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, saying this is in the interest of the state.

In a statement he issued after a brief meeting with the Governor, Gobir said he has had extensive deliberations with the Governor over the past few weeks on how to further move the state forward.

The step comes barely 24 hours after the People’s Democratic Party’s House of Representatives candidate in the February 25 election Hon. Wahab Oladimeji Issa and other top PDP chieftains defected to the ruling APC.

“My fellow Kwarans, in the last leg of this election trail, it has become apparent that the best way to achieve the goal we have before us is to forge alliances and combine ideologies. To this end, the Young Progressives Party hereby adopts the incumbent Governor and gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, in the upcoming gubernatorial election,” the statement reads.

“I assure you that this decision is not one that was made lightly. It was made after weeks of deliberation and a final concession that the incumbent Governor consider some of the policies outlined in my manifesto (the State of Kwara) alongside his equally well-intentioned 10-year Sustainable Development Plan (2021-2030). This ensures that, although I will be conceding my place in the gubernatorial race, the action plan that I feel addresses the peculiar needs of some 2,764 communities, 193 wards and 16 Local Government Areas in Kwara gets fused into the implementation of the Governor’s Development Plan.

“Further to this agreement, it is understood that the Governor, upon winning the election, will form a government that further accommodates allies, including members of our own party.

“My fellow Kwarans, a new dawn is upon us, not just for our beloved state but for our nation as well. With our support for Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, and the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are convinced that Nigeria is undoubtedly about to commence a journey of Renewed Hope.”
